General
Who is Toro Tutoring for?
Primarily homeschool families — though not exclusively. If you are looking for personal, relational, flexible educational support for a child or teenager, Toro Tutoring is worth a conversation. The work is especially well-suited to families who want more than test-prep or worksheet completion, and who value a thoughtful, Christian-grounded approach to education.
Is this a school?
No. Toro Tutoring is not a school, a co-op, or a full homeschool curriculum provider. It is a tutoring and educational support service — designed to strengthen and support whatever your family is already doing, or to provide targeted instruction your student needs.
Is Toro Tutoring only for Christian families?
No. While a Christian worldview — and specifically a Reformed Christian one — shapes the educator's approach, families of all backgrounds are genuinely welcome. Christian worldview integration is something offered for families who want it, not imposed on families who don't. The hospitality is real.
What age range do you work with?
Elementary through high school. Young children benefit from foundational instruction in reading, phonics, math, and basic writing. Older students — especially middle and high schoolers — are often a great fit for discussion-based humanities work covering history, theology, literature, economics, and worldview. Reach out and describe your student's situation; if there's a good fit, we'll know.
Logistics
Where do sessions take place?
In-person sessions in the Phoenix, AZ area take place at the family's home, a local library, a park, a college campus, or another setting that works for the student and family. Online sessions via Zoom are available for families anywhere. The location should serve the learning — not the other way around.
How often do sessions happen?
That depends on the family's needs. Some students meet once a week; others meet more frequently during intensive periods. Scheduling is handled directly and flexibly — there is no rigid package to purchase. The frequency should match what actually serves the student and what your family can sustain.
How long is a typical session?
Most sessions run between one and two hours, depending on the student's age, the subject matter, and what the family needs. Younger students often do better with shorter, more focused sessions. Older students engaged in discussion-based work can often sustain and benefit from longer ones. This is something we figure out together based on what actually works.
Do you use a specific curriculum or textbook?
Not exclusively. The approach is flexible. For families with an existing curriculum, sessions can be built around what you are already using. For families who need help choosing resources, guidance is available. For some subjects — especially discussion-based humanities work — primary sources, significant books, and structured conversation are more useful than a textbook. The curriculum serves the student, not the reverse.
The Work
My child has had a hard time with previous tutors. Is this different?
It may be. Toro Tutoring is especially attentive to students who have not thrived in conventional instruction — whether that's because they need more patience, a different pace, a relational rather than clinical approach, or simply a teacher who listens before assuming. No guarantees, but if a student has felt unseen by other tutors, it is worth a conversation.
Do you work with students who have learning differences?
Yes, to a degree — with an honest caveat. There is no formal special education certification, and Toro Tutoring does not present itself as a specialist in diagnosed learning disabilities. What is present is genuine patience, attentiveness, flexibility, and a real desire to understand how a particular student thinks. For many students who learn differently, that is actually what makes the difference. If your student has a specific diagnosis, please mention it when you reach out so we can have an honest conversation about fit.
Can you help with subjects I don't feel equipped to teach?
Yes. This is one of the most common reasons families reach out. Whether it's a specific subject (theology, economics, early Greek) or simply the volume of instruction required, Toro Tutoring can step in and cover the ground your student needs covered.
